Dental Care
Dental disease is one of the most common illnesses found in our pets. Over 70% of our pets will have some form of dental disease before the age of 2 years old.
Dental disease is a very “pet specific” disease with some animals needing cleanings every 6 months to some needing it every few years.
It is important to have your pet examined for dental disease by your veterinarian as this can have an affect on major organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver.
Before
Signs of dental disease can be seen either at your pet’s annual wellness exam or at home. They include: discolored teeth, bad breath, inflamed gums, loose teeth, pain when eating, and reluctance to play with chew toys.
After
Teeth are cleaned by hand and with an ultrasonic scaler to safely remove tartar and calculus above and below the gum line. The patients’ entire mouth is evaluated carefully and any teeth that are loose, diseased, or causing discomfort are extracted. The teeth are then polished to help discourage future plaque build up.
At Central Veterinary Clinic we offer dental cleanings that are performed under general anesthesia. Dental cleanings are usually an outpatient procedure with your pet checking in between 7:30-8:00am and returning home the same day.
